Get Empowered!
Co-Director and Entertainment Facilitator

Fabiano “Sabiá” Pinheiro is the Co-Director and Entertainment Facilitator for Get Empowered!. Sabiá lives in Walnut Creek, California with his wife Sarah Baltazar and two young daughters Eva Lourdes and Stella Maresol.

Sabiá was born in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil and received his capoeira apelido at the age of 9. Immigrating to the New York City in 2003, Sabiá co-founded the Kipp Amp Capoeira program, which implemented a fully inclusive Capoeira fitness and arts program into the Kipp charter schools system, serving 3000 students. Leaving Kipp Amp to take a position at the prestigious New York University at Tisch School of the Arts, Sabiá was integral in developing their integrated capoeira programming. The capoeira program at NYU continues to be the first Drama & Theater program to mandate capoeira into their curriculum stating that the art form is an integral tool for students to understand movement acquisition, balance, coordination, and improvisation.

Sabiá received his Professor rank in 2012 and currently, in addition, to Get Empowered! he teaches at One Purpose Charter School in San Francisco. Sabiá has also worked in commercials, folkloric events, and performances that promote the art of capoeira. He has been featured in television commercials for Subway Sandwiches, Orbitz Gum, and America’s Got Talent. He appeared in the documentary film “The Evolution of the Art of Capoeira in the World,” the music video “Slave to the Beat” by Cid the Kid and a photo shoot layout for X magazine with Ricky Martin. He has performed at the National Endowment for the Arts Folk Festivals, Global Passport Charity Performance with the United Nations in Bermuda, Fall for Dance at the City Center of New York, and the Sun Flower Children Russell Simmons charity event. He also co-wrote “Let's Play Capoeira,” an illustrated children's book.

Sabiá collaborates with the Capoeira Foundation and The Capoeira Center of New York by helping support grant work that fosters the development and maintenance of capoeira art across the United States.
